Third Graders Can Now Read Newspapers from Around the World

Uncategorized No Comments

There is a museum in Washington D.C. called the Newseum.  My husband and son and I toured it last summer.  A great place to visit if you are in D.C.

In the Newseum there is on display the front page of newspapers from all over the world.  Now you can see this all online at the Newseum’s web page.

I can see lots of possibilities for learning in using this site.

  • Students can look up the newspaper of a city in a country or state that they are studying in social studies.
  • Students can compare the news from one city in a country to the news in another city of another country. What is the same?  Different?
  • Students can see how the news changes from day to day in one particular city.
  • Students can find the cities on a map of the world or a map of the United States.
  • Students can share with the class something they learned about the city that they read about.

Check it out and let me know what you think.

Learning about Christmas Around the World

One of the lessons I found that students really enjoyed when I was teaching was learning about how people celebrate Christmas in other countries.  Too many time children think that because they celebrate Christmas in a certain way that everyone does the same.

Here is a link that might help if you are thinking about having your students learn how other countries celebrate Christmas.  Have fun with it and you may learn something too.

Let me know how like this site and if it was helpful.

Christmas stories are one of my favorite parts of Christmas.  Whether you are a parent or teacher Christmas stories can be a great teaching tool for all ages.

Here are some of my all time favorites:

1.  The Very First Christmas by Paul Maier is a great telling of the birth of Jesus.

2.  Mr. Willowby’s Christmas Tree by Robert Barry is a fun story that will make you smile.  Every time I have read this book to kids they have loved it!

3.  Christmas Tapestry and Orange for Frankie by Patricia Polocco are  touching stories that even adults will love.
