What questions do you have for me that deal with the education of your elementary school student?
If you leave a comment, I will try to do a post on this blog about that topic.
My goal in this blog is to help parents be the best that they can be in partnering with their child’s teacher.
So let me know how I can help.

I’m a mom of a 3rd grader and I am concerned about what my kid should be learning in 3rd grade. I am at conflict with the teacher as I feel she is to easy with the kids in comparison to the teacher we had in 2nd grade in which i see the hard work we did in 2nd grade paying off now such as reading and writing. I’m being brief now but there are other things that are being neglected such as improving spelling and sentence structure that should be improved. I have a meeting with the principal because the teacher has yet to make any improvements. So, my question is what should a 3rd grader be learning? Am I pushing to hard?
I applaud you for your interest in what your child is learning in school. Your child is blessed to have you as a parent.
I am not sure how many weeks your child has been in school this fall, but here in Michigan children have only been back about three weeks. Because many children do not read, practice math or write during the summer months, they forget much of what they have learned. So review of second grade material is what is usually done for the first month or so. I am not sure if this is true in your child’s case. So talking to the teacher and principal is an excellent first step.
In answer to your first question, I will try to write some posts on this as it would be too lengthy to answer in this small space.
I hope that this is somewhat of a help to you. Stayed tune and feel free to email me if you want or leave another comment.

I feel the same way as the previous person. My boys are in third grade and the teacher has spent most of her time teaching cursive and not much else. We have conferences tomorrow and I’ll hopefully hear more of her plan in regards to writing for the future. But I was wondering what in your opinion should be taught during the 3rd grade year. Up to this point the only writing my children have really done has been journaling…no official “paper or report” on anything. Is that good or bad? Our school is “an excellent rated” school by the state but I have many misgivings with some teachers and the principal. I fear they are teaching to much to the state required testing and not enough creative teaching. I’d love to hear your feedback.
thanks so much!
I understand your concerns. Unfortunately, creativity in teaching and learning takes a backseat to state required testing.
I have a couple of suggestions:
1. Talk to the teacher and explain your concerns.
2. Ask the teacher if there are any more writing projects that they will be doing. How many should you as a parent expect to see come home.
3. Ask if there is a writing curriculum and if you could see it.
Communicating with the teacher is of utmost importance. Teaching your children is and always should be a partnership between you and the teacher.
I applaud you for your interest.
Now my opinion on how much writing should be done: I tried to have my students do many little writing projects in a month. However, usually we only had one major writing project during a quarter where we actually went through the writing process of planning, doing a rough draft, revising, editing and writing the final copy. This whole process takes a couple of weeks to finish.
Let me know if I can be of more help if I did not answer your question.
i wanna learn how can i help 3rd graders learn
I appreciate your question, but if you could be more specific that would help me know how I can best help you. In what areas do you want help?
