Helping Your Child Become a Better Reader,Part 3

by Mrs. Thorp on July 30, 2008

Once your child has developed into a fluent reader, your job as a reading coach parent has not finished.  Children still need support and gentle coaxing.  Here are some ideas to help your child to reach his full potential as a reader:

  • Make sure your child has a lot  of reading materials:  not just books but magazines too.
  • Take your child to the library. While he is picking out books, you can do the same.
  • Encourage your child to read about what he is interested in: sports, science, mysteries etc.
  • Listen to your child read aloud once in a while.  This way you can monitor his progress.
  • Have your child write stories  about something they did.  Then have them read the story to whomever will listen.
  • Continue to read to your child. If your child is interested in a chapter book, read the first chapters to your child and have your child finish the book to see how it ends.
  • Make reading a part of every day life:  read recipes, read road signs, read directions to a board game.
  • Encourage your child by giving them sincere praise for their effort.
  • Above all, keep reading. Practice make perfect!
