Teaching Your Child About the Olympics

by Mrs. Thorp on July 19, 2008

In less than three weeks the 2008 Olympics will start. How can parents turn this into a learning experience?

  • Whet your child’s appetite by reading the Magic Tree House Book, An Hour of the Olympics by Mary Pope Osborne. It is a fun way to get your child interested.
  • Go to the library and find some factual books on the Olympics.
  • Do a little internet research on the internet. The official website on the 2008 Olympics has lots of information.
  • Find the answers to these questions: Why are there 5 interfaced rings? Why were the colors of the rings chosen?
  • Learn about the Chinese culture by learning about the primary schools that are in China.
  • Get out a world map and find the countries that are taking part in the Olympics. Which country has the most competitors? Which has the least?
